In an era of standards-based reform and high stakes accountability, how can teachers personalize learning for all students? For students with special needs, how can we use standards and still individualize and meet individual educational plan goals? Is there a way to think about and manage seemingly contradictory expectations between standards and personalization? The purpose of this video is to illustrate how some teachers have learned to personalize learning for all students while maintaining high standards.
We feature a rubric that defines personalized learning and demonstrates the criteria that makeup the definition. The rubric was designed by a team of superintendents in Washtenaw County Michigan, and then validated by teachers, students, and parents in the district. The criteria that make up the rubric are: Share Responsibility, Co-Plan an Individual Student Program, Families Support, Learning Opportunities, Individual Learning Styles, Trust to Become Independent Learners, Collaborate.
As you watch the video keep in mind that the criteria are embedded in one another. Your time viewing is best spent observing and noting the big ideas you see emerging. Then reference a copy of the rubric (that you’ll download) to record your observations and judge the degree to which you believe the seven criteria are present. You can also use the rubric to determine how your own practice or those of others in your school are emerging with regard to personalizing learning for all students.
Three urban and one suburban school are featured in this video providing a K-12 perspective. In each segment teachers, parents, grandparents, and students demonstrate components of personalized learning.
