School Improvement Series: The Road to Hayden
One Route to School Improvement
Running time: 52 minutes / © 2004 / Price $79

When Hayden school principal Judy Love and her teachers reviewed Dr. Schlechty’s book, Working on the Work (WOW), they exclaimed, “He got the reform part right. But what it takes to get to WOW needs to be understood and described. You can’t get to WOW until you undertake a journey together as a school community.” This is a story of that journey. A journey that begins with the staff establishing a moral purpose for change that leads to tough decisions to sustain that change. Participants discuss their change process, and the resulting success of the initiative as measured in faculty and parent satisfaction, and high student achievement. From the Hayden story viewers will draw parallels to their own community, plus gain insights into drafting their own roadmap to school improvement.

What educators are saying about the series!

"Hayden Elementary has blazed the trail for providing quality learning for
all students which is so clearly documented in this video. We are following close behind them."

—Sheila Woo, Principal
Pooler Elementary School
Pooler, GA

"WOW school, WOW leader, WOW results. High expectations, shared responsibility carry the day in southern Indiana. Hayden Elementary has proven the power of consensus accountability forged through collaboration and clearly articulated leadership expectations."

—Scott Robison
Assistant Superintendent
Westfield Washington Schools
Westfield, IN

"Enhancing the quality of work we give children is clearly explained and modeled in this video set by focusing on student engagement and collaboration of faculty and staff."

—Jean Triplett, Principal
Morgan County Elementary School
Madison, GA

"WOW has made a tremendous difference in the culture and climate of the Fife SD. Our teachers now work together across grade levels and schools to develop lessons that will engage more students. We have created time and a structure for teachers to work together to develop lessons around 'challenging to teach' concepts. Educators in Washington State feel an enormous pressure for improving student scores on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). We believe the Standard Bearer framework for WOW has shifted the focus for Fife teachers away from test scores and accountability to a focus on what really matters-- students engaged in learning meaningful skills for their future. Teachers are creating more engaging lessons and as a result our test scores have increased significantly. Fife High School students had the highest scores in Western Washington on last year's test."

—Dr. Marti Harruff
Assistant Superintendent
Fife Public Schools
Fife, Washington
