Instructional Power

Nationally renowned co-teaching expert Dr. Marilyn Friend is back with a new instructional Series on Co-Teaching. We have three DVDs to in our new Co-Teaching Video Series:

1. More Power: Instruction in a Co-Taught Classroom
2. Releasing the Power: Administrators on Inclusive Schooling and Co-Teaching
3. Instructional Power: Co-Teachers Share Instructional Techniques

Dr. Friend will build on the six co-teaching arrangements she made famous in the Forum’s Power of 2 DVD by presenting seven elements of good quality instruction embedded in co-teaching. Research shows that too much co-teaching consists of instruction led by general education teachers with the special educator/specialist functioning in the role of helper. Dr. Friend believes much more is possible to maximize the power of 2. The seven elements shown are: assessment, content/materials, instructional environment, instructional presentation, student participation, evaluation of student performance, and adult interactions. DVD will include a viewing guide and tons of classroom footage from Charlotte, North Carolina schools.

Hopewell High School Principal: Dr. Louise Jones Co-Teachers Carol Puckett and Cindy Rudolph's 10th grade biology class engaged in a parallel teaching arrangement during our visit. This was our first stop during our February visit to CMS.

Albemarle Road Middle School Principal: Thomas Lamb		Co-Teachers Becky Funderburk and Melanie Hook present the agenda for the 8th Grade, Language Arts, limerick lesson at Albemarle Road Middle School. Principal Lamb is under the lights.

Huntingtowne Farms Elementary School Principal: Pamela Frederick		Marilyn poses with some of our gracious hosts at Huntingtowne Farms. We visited two classes and captured some wonderful co-teaching. During our "snow day" in Charlotte, Principal Fredrick (seen with CMS's Laura Hamby) allowed us to shoot Marilyn's stand-up pieces in their media center. If you watch the DVD, know that a lot was shot at this school. Special thanks to Ann Jolly.

Billingsville Elementary School Principal: Byron Campbell We swooped into co-teachers Jackie Hahn and Amber Larkin’s forth grade math class. They demonstrated a station teaching arrangement. Look for their interview on data decision-making on the DVD.

Long Creek Elementary Principal: Chad Thomas Our forth day of shooting ended at Long Creek observing co-teachers Celia Chisolm and Alena Pevey's fifth grade math lesson. Thanks to Principal Thomas, pictured with Marilyn, for allowing us to take over his media center for the afternoon.

West Charlotte High Principal: John Modest We visited West Charlotte H.S., home of the Lions, twice during our visit. Once to interview Principal Modest, then to learn some Algebra from co-teachers Tamika Jackson and Sonia Moorman.

	Wilson Middle Principal: Eric Ward Co-teachers Monica Palmer and Juanita Razor and the terrific students in their 8th grade language arts class are very patient people. Our crew was two hours late but Wilson welcomed us with that great CMS hospitality.

Reid Park Elementary Principal: Mary Sturge Our last shoot in Charlotte for More Power! was completed at Reid Park. We were pleased to watch co-teachers Garrett Nash, Tabatha Coulter and Carl Izzard engage in hands-on activities. Much thanks to Principal Sturge and her staff.
